Tax Commissioners Continue Consultations

Basseterre, August 01, 2002 The Tax Reform and Administration Commission is continuing to review the revenue systems of the member countries of the ECCU. At the fifth meeting of the Commission held in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Commissioners examined fiscal policy issues, in particular the establishment of fiscal targets, based on the need for government to generate savings, while ensuring that the tax-system is not burdensome, and that expenditures are efficient. Other issues related to the taxation of income and services formed part of the discussions. While in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Commissioners held consultations with the Cabinet of Ministers, the Leader of the Opposition and representatives of the public and private sectors. Prospects for stimulating and sustaining growth, uniformity in the tax system, efficiency in consumption and property taxation, and co-operation in revenue administration in the region were among the matters raised. The next meeting of the Commission is slated for August 26 & 27, 2002 in Grenada.
