Regional Leaders Focus on Developing Statistical Capabilities
Basseterre, St Kitts, 6 September 2007 Click here for the Conference Programme The importance of accurate, reliable statistics and the need for statistical models to further the economic development of small states was the recurring theme of the speakers at the opening ceremony of the International Conference on Statistics, at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium, St Kitts, on Wednesday, 5 September 2007. Hon Sam Condor, Deputy Prime Minister for Saint Christopher (St Kitts) and Nevis, noted that since traditional models were based on the characteristics of large economies such as China, models representing the circumstances of small states were not available. He emphasised that in developing the appropriate models, efforts should be made to ensure the use of reliable, relevant statistics against which the progress of the economies could be benchmarked and interrelationships between sectors analysed. It was also imperative to focus on human resource training, capacity building and the creation of the appropriate legal framework. Hon Victor Banks, Anguilla
