Junior Achievers Pilot Programme starts in Saint Christopher (St Kitts) and Nevis

Basseterre 16 November 2004 Secondary school students from Saint Christopher (St Kitts) and Nevis are participating in a pilot project, aimed at preparing them for the business world by providing them with practical experience in business start-up and operations. It is being promoted under the Junior Achievement International programme, by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank in collaboration with the Rotary Club of St Kitts, the Ministry of Education and other public and private sector organisations. The students will be required to identify and propose business opportunities within Saint Christopher (St Kitts) and Nevis. They will be exposed to the various aspects of market research, and development of business proposals. The students will operate the business and provide a performance report at the end of the project. The exercise is expected to assist them in understanding the dynamics of teamwork while enhancing their communication skills. Tutors from the participating schools attended a one-day training seminar sponsored by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank and the Rotary Club of St Kitts at the ECCB Headquarters on 12 November 2004. Mrs Anselma Calderon of Junior Achievement in St Lucia was the lead facilitator. Mr Trevor Blake, Director of the Financial Enterprise Development Department of the ECCB and President of the Rotary Club of St Kitts told the teachers that the project was expected to ignite the entrepreneurial spirit in the youth of the region, ultimately resulting in an increase in successful business ventures.
