Governor Updates Media in Montserrat on Recent Developments in ECCU
As the Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), Timothy N. J. Antoine, continued his 2022 Country Outreach Missions to ECCB member countries, he met with various stakeholders on Montserrat from 8 – 10 June.
During that visit, the Governor paid a courtesy call on the Governor of Montserrat, Her Excellency Sarah Tucker, and held discussions with the Premier, Honourable Joseph Farrel; the Leader of the Opposition, Honourable Paul Lewis; representatives from the Bank of Montserrat Limited, and other social groups. Governor Antoine also visited the Brades Primary, the Bank’s mentorship school, where he met with the principal, staff and students. Governor Antoine concluded his mission to Montserrat with a media conference.
This week’s episode of ECCB Connects focuses on Governor Antoine’s engagement with the media where he addresses concerns about a possible recession sparked by the war in Ukraine; the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising inflation.
Governor Antoine informed the media that no recession in the ECCU was envisioned at this stage. He said that the region was still recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and with the continued relaxed restrictions to travel, tourism would rebound and growth was expected among the ECCU economies within the coming months.
In response to a question on his recommendations for the island of Montserrat, Governor Antoine offers advice on the need for the country to become a player in the digital economy, given that its small size is a constraint. He adds that a sustainable country requires a focus on the push for modern legislation, high speed broadband connectivity and opportunities for renewable energy.
