ECCU Private Sector and Strategic Partners Discuss Air Transportation in the Currency Union

Former Chairman of the OECS Authority, Dr the Honourable Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, has made a plea to the governments of CARICOM and the OECS to support the operations of LIAT, particularly in light of the on-going plans to purchase new ATR air planes to replace the LIAT fleet. Prime Minister Gonsalves was at the time delivering the featured address at a meeting of representatives of the ECCU Private Sector on 31 May. Representatives from the ECCU Chambers of Industry and Commerce, Air and Seaport Authorities, the OECS Civil Aviation Authority, LIAT, the ECCB, the OECS Secretariat and officials from the Financial and Private Sector Department of the World Bank attended the meeting which focussed on air transportation in the region. In his address, Prime Minister Gonsalves outlined the performance of LIAT over the past decade and the current challenges faced by LIAT. He also highlighted the critical role that LIAT played in facilitating air transportation in the region and the need to ensure its continued existence. During the meeting, the Honourable Sir K Dwight Venner, Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) announced the establishment of the OECS Business Council
