ECCU Fiscal Machinery To Enhance Budgetary Process

Basseterre, November 19, 2003 The ECCB coordinated joint meeting with Accountants General, Budget Directors and Directors of Audit from the eight member countries of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) convened on 17th November 2003 at the ECCB Headquarters in St Kitts. The public officials, part of Fiscal Machinery Teams in the respective countries met to discuss approaches to addressing the fiscal challenges in each country with a view to identifying best practices for the budgetary process. In his opening remarks, Sir K. Dwight Venner, Governor of the ECCB noted that the year 2007 would test the abilities of the member countries of the OECS and the wider Caribbean, and how they adjust to the financial demands imposed by the FTAA, the WTO, the Coutonou Agreement and the hosting of World Cup Cricket. It is expected that going forward, the participants will seek to develop a workable framework to address the issues identified as pivotal to the implementation of the fiscal reform processes. The meeting was facilitated by Mr. Graeme Hansen of the Caribbean Technical Assistance Centre (CARTAC), Ms Ingrid Shortte and Mr. Denzil James of the ECCB.
