Conference Creates Platform For Sustainable Development
Basseterre, St Kitts, 19 November 2004 Honourable Nigel Carty says the 8th Annual Development Conference serves to highlight the range of ecological, economic and social challenges, which confronts policy makers. The newly appointed Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Finance, Technology and Sustainable Development in Saint Christopher (St Kitts) and Nevis, was delivering the feature address at the opening ceremony of the Conference on 18 November 2004 at the ECCB Headquarters. He stressed that policymakers in the region would need to re-evaluate their policies, considering the realities of the current environment, where factors such as globalisation continue to challenge Small Island Developing States. The issue is to determine the changes required for sustainable development. In light of the global economic climate, the ability of the ECCU member countries to remain economically viable reflects the strength of the monetary arrangements and the developmental agenda of the countries, Minister Carty said.
